This case study looks at the services Smart Dolphins IT provided to an engineering company located in Victoria, British Columbia. Due to the sensitivity of some details, the firm’s name has been omitted, however, for context, the company has more than 65 employees and specializes in electrical engineering.
Engineering firms are data-heavy organizations; access and retention of data is critical to core business operations. These assets include entire design histories from multiple data sources, large and complex drawings, and often many duplicated documents. Firms are required to keep data for compliance and legal purposes for 10 years. In the past, most engineering data has been stored on in-house servers. In today’s modern business world, storing, accessing, and collaborating on that data, from the cloud, provides a full range of benefits. Many firms have or are in the process of making the transition to cloud services.
The Smart Dolphins IT project team was engaged to develop a phased IT roadmap with the main objective to move more data to the cloud, specifically SOLIDWORKS to Microsoft Azure. After completing the project, we helped the client:
- Reduce their reliance on in-house servers, which are susceptible to power failures etc., that could result in loss of data
- Reduce overall IT complexity
- Enable a flexible remote work environment with centralized cloud storage, sharing and collaboration
- Implement a scalable solution (i.e., increased storage on-demand) which reduces capital expenditure as their team grows
The firm now operates a hybrid IT environment (some data hosted on Azure, some still continues to be on-premises). Their use of Microsoft 365 has simplified their IT, enabled remote work, and provided a scalable long-term IT solution with greater stability and all the security features available within Microsoft 365.
