Hot tip about personal hotspots!

With the introduction of iOS 4.3 a new feature was added to the iPhone called Personal Hotspot.  This new feature allows you to bring WiFi with you wherever you go!  The feature is easy to enable and once turned on will display a status bar whenever devices are connected.  Every connection is password protected and when not in use the personal hotspot will turn itself off to preserve battery life.

Here is how to enable the feature:

1) Tap Settings

2) Tap Personal Hotspot

3) Set the slider to ON and type a wi-fi password

Your iPhone Wi-Fi will now be discoverable.  The name of the Wi-Fi network will be the name of your phone.

There are a few caveats with the personal hotspot.  Two of the big ones are:

1)  Depending on your cellular data plan you could end up using all your bandwidth pretty quickly, especially if streaming video.

2)  This feature also drains the battery fairly quickly – with a device connected and actively transferring data you tend to see the battery last about 6-8 hours.

Now quit connecting to that network called linksys or dlink – connect to your own!
