What changed

Anthropic became a subprocessor for Microsoft 365 Copilot as of January 7, 2026. Anthropic models within Copilot are governed by Microsoft's Product Terms and Data Protection Addendum.

What it means for your business

For most Canadian businesses, no immediate action required. Organizations with data residency requirements should confirm with Microsoft how Anthropic model processing applies to their Copilot instance.

Consumer vs. business accounts

The real issue is not which AI tool. It is which account.

A note on Microsoft 365 Copilot: Copilot works inside your existing Microsoft 365 environment and can access everything an employee is already authorized to access. The governance risk is not data leaving Microsoft, it is existing overpermissions being surfaced. Organizations should audit SharePoint and file permissions before deploying Copilot.
