1. I like golf. I usually don’t play like I enjoy golf, but it is a great game regardless of my lack of golfing mastery. I also enjoy watching great golf on occasion.
  2. I love making a difference. I am truly proud when I am able to use the leverage of my business to do more than make a buck. We have supported dozens of non-profit organizations over the years in various forms and fashions and I’m really happy when we can make a difference, big or small.

Given these two facts, I’m really excited and proud that Smart Dolphins has sponsored of the Times Colonist Island Savings Open. This year the tournament is benefiting two charities that are dear to our hearts: Big Brothers Big Sisters and Greater Victoria Housing Society. Plus, I get to play and watch a bunch of golf!

This first stop on the Canadian Pro Golf tour has a long history; having started in 1981 it is the longest running on the Canadian Tour. Obviously, this makes it a very significant event in Greater Victoria, bringing in great exposure to our area and, of course, a significant economic contribution to our area. The Open not only contributes 100% of the gate receipts to charities every year, they are also strong supporters of amateur and youth golf; they work closely with UVic Vikes on this front. This year the tournament is at Uplands Golf Club, which just happens to be the course I played at as a “junior”; it is a great course.

I know golfers are a different breed and the non-golfers reading this will not be overly interested in the actual event. However, I would encourage everyone, including the non-golfers out there, to give it some consideration. It is a great event. Sure the tournament comes every year, but it has been coming to town for 28 years now and you haven’t made it yet. Tickets are inexpensive. Get out there and check it out!
