Making Space to Think Differently

Category : | Posted : Jul 24, 2025

I’ve come to value something many calendars don’t reflect: space to think.

Not a vacation. Not time off. Just time—without meetings, tasks, or expectations. White space.

I started building it into my schedule years ago. A block here or there. A morning. A full day if I could swing it. It often didn’t look like much, but it gave me room to follow an idea, step back from the daily noise, or simply notice what I hadn’t been noticing. Some of my clearest decisions and best ideas have come from that time.

It can take different forms. A few hours at my desk. A quiet walk around Swan Lake. Even a travel day, if I approach it with intention. The format matters less than the mindset. I’m not looking to fill the time. I’m protecting it so I can see what emerges.

It’s easy to confuse white space with time blocking. But they serve different purposes. Time blocking is about structure; white space is about openness. One brings order, the other creates possibility. I still plan my calendar carefully, but I leave pockets that orbit around this idea of space to think or to use more intuitively.

It’s not always easy to maintain. As the business grows, so does the pull of urgency: more people, more complexity, more things that “need” your time. It’s tempting to let the calendar run you. But I’ve learned what happens when I do: my thinking narrows, my energy dips, and I spend more time reacting than leading.

When I do protect white space, I notice the shift. I’m calmer, clearer, more intentional. I can step back and actually see the whole picture. Priorities sharpen. Decisions come more easily. Sometimes I do less, but what I do matters more.

We’ve tried to make space for this culturally at Smart Dolphins too. Meeting-free Wednesdays. Systems that support rather than crowd our focus. Modeling space as something that supports better work, not a lack of it.

It doesn’t always go perfectly. But the effort matters. It’s how we stay thoughtful instead of just busy.

White space might look different for everyone. But I believe it belongs in every leader’s rhythm. Especially when the business gets complex or the pace speeds up.

It’s not wasted time. It’s part of how we do our best work.

If you want to lead with clarity, you need room to think. And that means making space for it… on purpose.
