Growth Breaks What You Build

Anyone who’s grown a business beyond a handful of people knows how it goes: growth breaks what you build. It’s hard. It’s messy. It’s constant. And if you don’t adapt fast enough, it becomes the ceiling that limits your business.

You don’t just scale up. You outgrow what was working. Systems that functioned smoothly at five people start to groan at ten. Communication that used to be effortless becomes a tangled web. Just look at the difference in connections between 4, 6, and 8 people. Each new node multiplies the complexity.

Early on, I tried to include the whole company in our planning. That worked when we were a team of 5 or 6. I’d gather everyone together and, if I’m honest, probably spend too much time on a soapbox. It felt right. But as we grew, that started to break down. Just imagine twenty-plus people in a boardroom for two days trying to build a quarterly plan. That’s not alignment. That’s chaos.

Growth also tests your roles and structures. People end up overloaded, or generalist roles get stretched too far, too thin. Accountability blurs. Responsibilities drift. If you don’t have a framework for who does what, and why, it gets chaotic fast.

Leadership breaks and reforms, too. You go from leading individuals to leading leaders. You go from ordering the pizza, to trusting your team will handle it and coaching them to delegate it, too. You start hiring people who are better at things than you are and if your ego is still wrapped up in being the smartest in the room, that’s going to hurt.

That’s why growth demands constant reinvention. You’re always building and rebuilding.

Scaling a business is like playing a video game where the rules and terrain keep changing. What got you through one level might set you back on the next. My strengths have often become my limitations at certain stages. What once made me effective starts to hold the team back if I don’t adapt.

Here’s what’s often missed: growth pain doesn’t mean you’re doing it wrong. It just means you’re growing. I’ve fallen into the trap of thinking, “If it stopped working, we must be screwing it up.” But that mindset doesn’t help. It slows you down. Or worse, it makes you start protecting what you’ve built instead of evolving it.

We’re still figuring it out, but we’ve had to get faster at it. Growth doesn’t just add complexity, it accelerates it. The cost of staying stuck gets higher, and the gaps show up quicker. So you learn to spot what’s breaking earlier and rebuild sooner.

This is what we sign up for in business. If it was easy, everyone would do it. But if you find energy in building, embrace the discomfort and keep reinventing then you can stay in the game for a long time.

That’s the work. And that’s the reward.
