For larger small businesses (25 to 100 computers/employees), the IT labour requirements of their computer network can be significant enough that consideration is given to hiring a full time employee to dedicate to the IT Support roles. The alternatives are having an in-house employee support the organization on a part time basis, while also serving other significant roles. Or a company can outsource their IT support to companies like Smart Dolphins. There are a number of considerations here, many of which are often overlooked. I will be sharing some of these considerations through a series of six blogs over the coming weeks. Here is the sixth.
Last week I reviewed some of the challenges of developing and adhering to process for the one-person tech department. This week I will be discussing when it definitely makes sense to have an internal technical employee.
In my previous five ramblings on this topic, I have said a lot favouring outsourcing versus hiring an internal employee to lead and manage your technology. I could go on, but I’m sure I already sound like I’m ranting. In case you’d still like more fodder here is an article on this topic:
I’m biased in my perspective and I’m sure I’m neglecting the many “pros” to keeping IT staff internally. Is there a place for hiring a full time employee? One place where an internal technical person is critical is when the technology they are responsible for is a core competency and is critical to the company’s competitive advantage. I actually see a lot of opportunity for companies to better use technology to compete, but they need someone to work very intensively and focus on those technologies. In these situations, Smart Dolphins can actually help by taking the generic IT support (the stuff we do for all our clients and we can generally do better, faster and cheaper than the internal tech) off of the internal person so they can focus on the company-specific technology projects and capabilities.
Overall, I do see a lot of the costs of making the wrong decision with respect to the option of hiring internal IT support staff. I am very passionate about what we do for our customers and our place in the world. I hate seeing waste in business and there is a lot of it with respect to IT support in small companies.
